Design has always been more than a profession to me. It is about creating spaces that work well, stand the test of time, and reflect the people who will use them.
I am the founder of Gilchrist Design Studio, where I specialize in residential design, additions, renovations, cottages, and small commercial projects throughout Ontario. With more than 25 years of experience in architectural design and construction, I bring practical knowledge, technical expertise, and a collaborative approach to every project. From the first concept to permit ready construction drawings, my goal is to make the design process straightforward while delivering creative and functional solutions.
Education has also been an important part of my career. For more than 29 years, I have taught in both the Carpenter Apprentice Program and the Construction and Renovation Techniques program at Algonquin College. Working with future tradespeople has allowed me to share industry knowledge while staying connected to the evolving practices and standards of construction.
Outside of architecture, I am the author and creator of the Ottawa Valley Whereabouts book series. What began as a passion for exploring back roads and forgotten places has grown into a collection of books documenting the history, landscapes, and hidden stories that make the Ottawa Valley unique. Through thousands of kilometres of travel and countless hours of research, I have discovered that every place has a story worth telling.
These three passions, design, education, and storytelling, are closely connected. Each is built on careful observation, thoughtful planning, and a genuine appreciation for craftsmanship. Whether I am designing a custom home, mentoring the next generation of builders, or documenting the history of a century old landmark, I believe that attention to detail and a commitment to quality make all the difference.
